None of these are “alternatives” to the iPod Touch. The 2 Samsung devices are YEARS old and discontinued. The Phillips “Go Gear” doesn’t even have a screen. The Sony devices would only qualify as alternatives to an Ipod you know, just a regular old MP3 player and then you actually listed the iPod Touch as an “alternative” to an iPod Touch. Is this a joke? The ONLY device that even qualifies to be on this list is the Creative Zen X-Fi2 which hasn’t been updated since 2009. Pioneer XDP-100R-K was a great product, non lagging Android OS and premium sound no Apple product can replicate. This product line has been updated with the Pioneer XDP-300R-S that is even more superior with doubling the amp and balanced headphone jack. The battery life of these high end media players are reduced because you have the best high-res audio coming through some of the best preamp and amps on the market that you’d only be able to replicate with a high end AVR/amp combo. IPod has been an inferior product for so long now because they have made a simple product for the simple mass.
If you want to experience audio like the studio intended, you need a high-end device like the Pioneer and high-end 2.5mm balanced headphones which will cost as much or more than the player. I’ve been audio hungry my whole life and I rather listen to my old Walkman cassette player than an iPod. I don’t work for any of these companies and this is my opinion. I understand why iPod like devices aren’t made, because you can by a Kindle or similar tablet for about $39 and get the same exact quality audio. Pioneer is definitely my top choice for a real and true audio experience and Sony makes some great products too like their headphone amp. Pair Sony’s Walkman and amp together, you get a similar experience than the all-in-one Pioneer. I don’t know why there is someone that thinks that real alternatives to get a better experience is a “scam”.
Instead of going to Best Buy, go to your nearest authorized Marantz dealer and listen to some of the cleanest high-end audio you’ll ever hear. When you fully understand gain and impedance, how it effects sound, then listening to the difference, I don’t know how you could go back. When you start doing your setups just go for the 10 AWG wire and Sewell Banana plugs. Get some big powerful loudspeakers, hook them up to an equally powerful amp, hook that up to a receiver a few or 15 grand later your ears will thank you. Even with the recent release of iTunes 10, speed and performance hasn’t been addressed in any meaningful way. We have covered some, but if you’re a geek who wants as as little to do with iTunes as possible, we’ll look at some quality alternatives.
