Sleep dopesmoker

The album is epic. So is Sleeps's Holy Mountain. Be aware that the 2012 remaster released by Southern Lord is crushed.

The smoke has been crushed out of it. The 2012 remaster has a DR4 on CD. I've not managed to listen to more than about 15 minutes of it before waving the white flag of surrender. The digital distortion to get a DR4 is just horrendous. The older versions of Dopesmoker and Jerusalem are better mastered and much easier and more enjoyable to listen to. The 2003 release of Dopesmoker on CD has a DR5 but is much much easier to listen to than the 2012 remaster.

The old Jerusalem on CD that I have from 1999 has the song split into separate tracks as for the LP. Each track is DR6 or DR7. Much much much much better.

Get one of the Jerusalem versions. I haven't heard any version on vinyl yet. And are on Discogs where you can see the different releases and buy one of the older versions. The album is epic.

Jerusalem was the first recording session of that track, nothing edited or cut though.

Dopesmoker was the second expanded session with more crunchy guitars and some extensions here and there. The band declared it as a much better, more punchy sound, more in your face. For the vinyl experience I recommend strictly the first 2- LP Version of dopesmoker from Tee Pee Records.

Dopesmoker band

This has the much better mastering and/or cutting. The Southern Lord does have a very nice sleeve (holographic foil on some editions) but sadly sound some kind of muffled with less punch and clarity. The Jerusalem session, sadly never made it to vinyl til now.

Never heard of them, my sons friend couldn't go so I went. I couldn't believe how great they were, my first concert was Sabbath in 72. I think I was the oldest person there ( I don't look old though). These guys are like Sabbath on steriods. It wasn't as loud as you would think either, we saw King Crimson there when it was Avalon, they were much louder, I think I lost some hearing in my left ear from that! I have the new vinyl (see avatar) it sounds really good, my son gave me the new CD, I like the vinyl better.

I'll have to seek out the original vinyl. Clip of the HOB show Review w/pictures of the HOB show.
